Majority of urban housing is supplied by the market where land and finance play a major role. Access to decent housing that is affordable for all is key to a habitable city. However cities across developed and developing countries are grappling with varying degrees of housing unaffordability as per the specifics of local land and labour markets. Policymaking and planning to ensure access to decent affordable housing for all income groups is a complex process and requires multi-pronged approach. It requires framing of policies and regulations that will enable local markets to generate adequate, affordable and decent housing stock. At the same time it requires framing of policies, programmes and regulations that will provide assistance to households, living in substandard housing not catered to by the formal markets, to access decent affordable housing. It is only when such a multipronged approach is adopted, that cities will be able to efficiently address the issue of housing unaffordability in their specific land and labour market.

International Master of Interior Architectural Design
2 years
The International Masters in Interior Architectural Design course is unique in India in that it integrates a commitment to understanding major design concerns at both India and global levels. The IMIAD program focuses on cultivating and strengthening a designer’s sensitivity to issues concerning the global world in the spirit of tolerance and pluralism with reference to traditional moorings and cultural convictions. The IMIAD program is aligned with the M. Des – Interior Design program in order to optimize the studio-based learning structures being offered. Interior Design is concerned with the immediate physical environment of a human being, encompassing spiritual, philosophical, mental and emotional relationships that connect Man and space. It is an essential part of our everyday lives. As the demands of society are becoming more complex so also are design responses. As a profession, it deals with a broad range of skills and technical knowledge necessary to deliver effective solutions to design briefs. Both Master of Design in Interior Design and IMIAD programs are interdisciplinary design-led and research informed programmes, examining the practical and theoretical discourses in the field of interior design. The Master of Design in Interior Design and IMIAD courses at the Faculty of Design have been established to realize the need for design, research, innovation, and experimentation in the field of interior design. The opportunity is to create and innovate in a global economy, drawing from our own resource pool of extremely rich, pluralistic, multi-polar and challenging Indian context. It seeks to promote theoretical discourses, advance design, and technical skills and build professional networks in the field of interior design. The programme cultivates and strengthens the designer's acute sensitivity towards global issues and encourages the individual to act in accordance with traditional moorings and cultural convictions. The course is spread over four semesters, each emphasizing a specific aspect of the interior design practice. Studios in this program are offered by a range of academic and practicing design professionals, and thus have a balance of practice-oriented and theoretical explorations. During the first semester, a foundation studio is offered which emphasizes and revolves around the idea of a design process. The subsequent semesters have independent studio units offered, enabling students to choose their own path and journey. The studios revolve around the key themes centred on the idea of culture-heritage, technology-production, and economy-profession. Apart from the studio units, there are other theory and technology-driven courses introducing students to key concepts in the field of design. Students also get to choose their own palette of elective and summer winter courses to complete their credit requirement. Graduates from these programs employ their design skills to work with national and international government and non-government organizations, design firms and agencies, academic institutions, research centres, and, as Ph. D. students and independent consultants. While both M. Des – Interior Design and IMIAD program share many similarities, the key difference between the two is that in order to complete the requirements for IMIAD, A student must join a semester-long international exchange with one of the partner institutes of their choice as well as a two-week-long international workshop at a pre-decided partner institute. The IMIAD is one of the first postgraduate degree programs in India with an International affiliation.
