Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry

The Department of Veterinary Physiology & Biochemistry started functioning in 1948 with the establishment of the Camp Veterinary College at Hisar affiliated to Punjab University, when the college was shifted from Lahore to Hisar, The department was shifted to the present building in the year 1958, and was named as department of Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry headed by Dr. C.L. Vohra LVP-PVS-I. Dr. Kalicharan and Dr. D.P. Sharma were Assistant Professors and Dr. (Mrs.) S. Bhardwaj and Dr. Daljeet Singh Sahani were demonstrators. On establishment of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) in 1962 with Hisar as Campus, the department was reorganized and was renamed Department of Veterinary Physiology & Pharmacology with Dr. Ajit Singh as Head, Dr. B.S. Paul as Professor Pharmacology, Dr. B. Mishra, Associate Professor of Physiology, Dr. B.D. Garg, Assistant Professor of Pharmacology, Dr. P.D. Kapoor & Dr. O.P. Nangia, Assistant Professors of Veterinary Physiology, Dr. M.S. Setia as Assistant Professor of Physiological Chemistry and Dr. V.K. Agarwal & Dr. V.P. Dixit as Lecturers. In 1970 the Departments of Veterinary Physiology and Pharmacology were separated with Dr. D.P. Sharma as Head of Veterinary Physiology. In 1972, Dr. S.S. Sukhija joined as Assistant Professor in Physiological Chemistry. The faculty gained strength by joining of Dr J. P. Puri & Dr S.L.Garg. Dr. Sandeep Gera, Dr. M. Gupta joint teaching fraternity in Veterinary Physiology in 1986, Dr. M.K. Rose and Dr. Sonia Sindhu in 1995. The Department of Veterinary Public Health and Epidemiology established in 1978 and is engaged in teaching, research and extension activities which include teaching of three (3) under-graduate and twenty five (25) post-graduate courses besides two diploma courses. Research activities broadly include Public Health (food hygiene, zoonoses and environmental hygiene) and Epidemiology (animal & poultry disease investigations), and lot of farmers visit department daily for disease diagnosis/investigation in poultry flocks, sheep flocks and cattle herds. Outbreaks throughout the state in different spp. are investigated and control and preventive measures are suggested for their containment. Disease Investigation Laboratories of the department also exist at six districts of the state, where field Veterinarians send samples or farmers bring cases/samples for disease diagnosis for mastitis, fecal examination, blood examination, antibiotic sensitivity testing, poultry D. I., outbreak investigation etc.. Extension activities are aimed at diagnostic and advisory services to farmers of Haryana, veterinary public health orientation and active participation in different trainings of farmers. Facilities are available on nominal charges for bacteriological testing of drinking water and adulteration of milk/synthetic milk/aflatoxin testing in feeds/grains and TB/JD screening of herds.

The department of Livestock Farm Complex (LFC) was created in 34th meeting of Academic Council on 27.10.2016 in terms of notification of Veterinary Council of India regarding Minimum Standards of Veterinary Education (B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree course) Regulations, 2016. The department is actively involved in imparting quality teaching and hands on training to students in rearing of livestock species including poultry to improve their skill and competence in livestock production. The department provides the services of teaching with the facilities of housing, feeding, breeding, record keeping and management of large and small ruminant units, poultry and animals of regional interest.
