Govt First Grade College Bankapur is an affiliated institution of Karnataka University. The University prescribes the syllabi, academic calendar, examination and evaluation. The faculty members of the college have the privilege of being the members of Board of Studies and the Board of Examination and thereby contribute to the syllabi and evaluation. Hence the responsibility of designing the curriculum does not solely rest with teachers. Although the curricula are designed by the university, few experienced teachers of this institution contribute to the curricula by being the members of Board of Studies and Board of Examiners of different subjects. This place is also known for religious landmark. Today we have the oldest temples in the town built in 11th century A.D. namely Shri Nagareshwara, and Hoysaleshwara. Under the freedom movement many patriots of Bankapur who took active participation in freedom movement and many of them had been jailed by British rulers. Bankapur had the privilege of revenue headquarter as a taluka till 1954. Bankapur peacock sanctuary situated in Bankapur village of Shiggon taluk, is just 2.5 km from the Pune-Bangalore national highway NH-4.This sanctuary is situated on 139 acres of land which has the remains of the historic Bankapura Fort.The peacock sanctuary in Bankapura is the only second sanctuary in the country that is exclusively engaged in the conservation and breeding of peacocks.
