Government Arts and Science College, Karwar is one of the premier and oldest Higher educational Institutions of Uttara Kannada district, Karnataka. After a humble beginning in 1961 as Keshava Gajanana Sabnis College under private management of Academy of General Education, it was taken over by the Department of Collegiate Education of Government of Karnataka in 1977. For the next three decades it was offering graduate courses in Arts and Science, affiliated to Karnataka University, Dharwad. However, in the recent past, the college expanded its academic horizon by including newer subjects like Computer Science & Biotechnology in B.Sc. and also by opening new courses such as BBA and B.Com. More importantly, it has also opened Post Graduate Departments of Industrial Chemistry, Zoology and Kannada to offer M.Sc. and M.A. courses and will be opening MSc Computer Sciece and Master of Tourism Administration(MTA) courses from the coming academic year. The college also hosts a Study Centre of Karnataka State Open University, Mysore which caters to the higher educational needs of those who cannot obtain conventional education.
