Shrimati Indira Gandhi College was founded in 1984 by that great educationist Vidys Seva Ratnam K. Santhanam, as the then secretary of National College Council, with the active support of President Y.Venkateshwara Dikshidhar. It is situated in the heart of the town, right opposite to the Chatram Bus stand. It is an unaided college and one of the first two colleges in the State founded simultaneously and exclusively for Women. It was so named in remembrance of the greatest women Prime Minister of the world. There is a life size statue of Indira Gandhi in the campus to inspire the students. Classes commenced with the Blessings of His Holiness the 44th Jeer of Shri Ahobila Mutt on 15th October 1984. The college was formally inaugurated by the then Vice president of India His Excellency Sri.R.Venkataraman.
