Sri A.B.R Government Degree College was established in 1972 at Repalle, a municipal town in the eastern coastal belt of Andhra Pradesh (A.P). The college is named after Sri. Anagani Bhagavantha Rao, former minister of A.P., who took the initiative of mobilizing donations from the residents of Repalle for depositing with the Government. of the initial endowment of Rs 1.50 Lakhs. The A.P Government started the college with the goal of providing higher education to the people of this backward rural region. The college to start with functioned in a rented building with just two faculties, Arts and Commerce, with temporary affiliation of Andhra University, Waltair. Then the college moved to its present premises only in 1985 in a 9.85 acres site demarcated from the neighbouring Junior college campus. The science programmes were added in 1995. At present the college is affiliated to Acharya Nagarjuna University, Guntur. Today it stands with 547 students, 15 permanent faculties and offers 4 UG programmes (including one self-financing course). The institution has got U.G.C recognition under 2(f) and 12B in 1998. The college has quite recently spelt out its own moto (Liberation through education) and also mission, goals and objectives with due emphasis on higher education to rural youth. The college has continued to attract a good number of rural based students from poor sections who would not have had access to higher education otherwise. The peer team consisting of Prof. Thangamuthu, Vice Chancellor, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli as the chairman, Dr. Arun Adsool, Principal, Vidya Pratishthan's Arts, Science and Commerce College, Vidyanagari, Baramati, Pune and Prof. M.A.Khan, Department of History, Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur as members visited this college during 27-28 July, 2006 and interacted with the Principal, Management (Directorate of Higher Education) representatives, teachers, students and alumni, and examined all the relevant records by way of validating the self-study report submitted by the college. Dr. Mrs. Sujatha Shanbhag, Assistant Adviser, NAAC, coordinated the peer team visit.
